Source of issue –Customer - Speed Marine
Description –
Speed Marine purchased 12 x Barra Anodes cast in Aluminium (rather than Zn). o/n 200904128, Inv 50776 7NOV20. Today they sent photos of the anodes with the cable broken off where it enters the anode. This has happened to 2 anodes, which they replaced for their customer. As far as our records show, this is the first time Barra anodes have been cast in Aluminium.
Immediate action –Informed Laurence from Speed Marine that if they want to continue purchasing Al Barra anodes, we will need to cast onto a heavier cable.
Root cause –We believe that the cause may be that the anode is lighter, so it moves around on the end of the wire more easily with wave and current action and also if the vessel is in motion, this movement may cause the wire to fatigue. It may also be that the casting temperature of Aluminium is higher than the casting temperature of Zinc, which may weaken the wire rope.
Corrective action –
For future orders, do not supply Al Barra anodes with standard cable. Look at heavier cable options.
